Specialty Teams

In 2003 the Howell Area Fire Department continued to enhance our Special Teams where our firefighters are trained and equipped in specialty responses.

Technical Rescue Team
Team members are trained in technical rescue areas which include extrication of trapped victims, confined space rescue, trench collapse and cave-ins, rigging and rope rescue, and collapsed structure rescue.

Hazardous Materials Response Team
The Howell Area Fire Department is very active in the Livingston County joint hazardous materials response plan. The primary purpose of this group is to perform rescues of victims who may be involved or contaminated, or if we can, safely and effectively mitigate a situation and return our community back to normal as soon as possible after an event occurs.

This team was first implemented in 1996 and includes the governmental units of the Brighton Area Fire Department, Howell Area Fire Department, Hamburg Township Fire Department, Putnam Township Fire Department, Green Oak Township Fire Department and the Livingston County EMS. In July 2003 the HazMat Team purchased and took delivery of a new Ford E450 Cargo Truck for storage and transportation of hazardous materials incident response equipment. This vehicle is housed at the jointly staffed Brighton Area/Howell Area Fire Station #34 on Dorr Rd. in Genoa Township.

Underwater
Search and Recovery Team

Again this past year our Underwater Search and Recovery Team has continued to enhance their skills and improve the equipment needed to perform operations. This team continues towork very closely with the Livingston County Sheriff's Department Dive Team.
Fire Investigation Team
This team is staffed with trained members of the Howell Area Fire Department who are responsible for identifying the cause and origin of all fires when called upon by the incident commander. If the fire is determined to be incendiary in nature, the team works together with the appropriate police agencies and the Livingston County Fire Investigation Team and/or the Michigan State Police/Fire Marshal Division, to bring the case to a successful conclusion through the court system.
