Public Education
The United States is consistently
at or near the top of the list of modern industrial nations that
have a major problem with fire. This is the case whether the measurement
is by property loss, injuries and deaths, or fires per capita.
One of the target audiences for public
fire safety education is children. Not only are they the most receptive
to the message, but also they carry what they learn into adulthood.
It is also critically important to reach children, as they are one
group of citizens at increased risk to be injured or killed from
fire. This past year our Public Fire Education program reached approximately
5169 children and 1571 adults by doing fire station tours, talks
and visiting the schools. They emphasized to the children and adults
how to prevent a fire, what to do in case of a fire and what to
do in case their clothes catch on fire.
They were also given
the opportunity to see firefighter's turnout gear and equipment
and a fire truck. Again this year we held our fire department annual
open house that was attended by approximately 700 Howell area residents
that were given the opportunity to be educated on fire safety, to
talk with all of the fire department personnel and to see all of
the fire department equipment.
